A new report quantifying the toll extreme weather has taken on the lives and health of Australians over the past decade has listed older people, younger men and Queenslanders as among some of the most vulnerable. The Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW) report, released today, looked into the number of hospitalisations and deaths directly related to extreme heat, bushfire, rain and storms, and extreme cold in Australia over the course of a decade up to 2021–22. It found heat was by far the leading cause of weather-related injury for every state and territory except Tasmania.
